Over the past week, Team 2 has been secretly practicing our item for Mrs Brownlie's farewell assembly. On Friday Mrs Brownlie got to see what we had been up to and BOY was she surprised.
For those of you who were unable to make it, we have put our item into a movie for your viewing pleasure! Sit back and see us in action!

FAREWELL SCHOOL ASSEMBLY
This Friday, there will be a farewell assembly for the staff who are leaving Fendalton at the end of the year. We (Room 2) will be performing a short item to say goodbye to Kirsty and to wish her good luck at Cashmere next year. It would be lovely to se those who can make it.

This is this Thursday 9th December at school. Bring along a picnic dinner and some Christmas attire (optional of course!) to the area by the big tree from 5pm onwards.
The Junior Team will sing some Christmas carols at 5.45pm in the new lunch area in the Junior playground. So, bring along some Christmas attire and join in with the festivities! We look forward to seeing you all there.

CAKE STALL FUNDRAISING
Thank you all so much for you wonderful support with our cake stall on Friday. We managed to raise $413.00! This money will go towards a new sunshade for the playhouse area. We will be talking to the P.T.A tomorrow night to see if they are able to help with this project too.
We couldn’t have done this without your help especially Katrina Dunn who set up the stall and Mila Vevey who stayed to help ALL DAY!.
Thank you so very much for supporting our learning here at school.
You are FANTASTIC!
BOOK AMNESTY
Keep those books coming on in to school! Have a hunt around home for any that might have strayed they can turn up in the most peculiar places! They cost around $6 each, so it is great if they can come back as it helps us to purchase more new titles.

We are going to have a Christmas shared lunch on Wednesday 15th December at 12.30pm as a final fun lunch for the children. If you could bring along a named plate of food for this, it will be greatly appreciated. Try to include some yummy healthy options too. If you want to join us for this lunch you are most welcome.

TEAM 2 NEWS – Week 6 – 15 November 2010
Dear Parents
What an amazing weekend of beautiful weather! We hope you had a wonderful time enjoying the sunshine. This is such a busy time of year for everyone and school is pretty hectic at the moment. The children are loving their swimming lessons at Wharenui, they are also starting to prepare for our Run Jump Throw Day (Junior Athletics), they are learning Christmas Carols in preparation for our Cathedral visit in December and are preparing for their Student Led Conference this week. Phew!
Some News…
After 15 years at Fendalton School, I (Kirsty) have finally decided to move on. I have won a position teaching New Entrants at Cashmere Primary School in 2011. Two of my children go to Cashmere Primary (my eldest will start High School next year), and it will be so much easier for me to be at the same school as them. Instead of sending my children off in one direction, while I head off in another other each morning, we will be able to go to school together! It has been a really hard decision for me to make as I have loved working at Fendalton – the children are gorgeous, the parents so supportive and the staff are fantastic. And of course Paulette is just amazing to work with and I’ll really miss her. So I am a bit sad about it, but excited at the same time.
What’s coming up…
Week 6
Student Led Conferences - Wednesday 17th November and Thursday 18th November.
This week we will be holding Student Led Conferences on Wednesday and Thursday. Your child should have brought home a timetable last week so that you know which day your conference will be on. If you didn’t receive a timetable, please check the timetable in the classroom, or ask Kirsty or Paulette. The Student-Led Conferences are run by the children - with some guidance from us! The children will share with you what they are doing in class at present and will show you work that they did when they first started school. Please celebrate the progress your child has made. The children will also share their Learning Report with you. The Learning Report is a portfolio containing assessments and comments about pupil progress and samples of your child’s work. Learning Reports have replaced the formal school report that used to be sent home at the end of the year. You will be able to take the Learning Reports home at the end of the conference. Please take it home for the week and then return it to school. The Learning Reports will continue to be added to throughout your child’s time at Fendalton School, so it is important that it is returned to school in Week 7. The Student-Led Conference is a celebration of your child’s learning in a relaxed setting. Several families will be present at the same time. It is not a formal Parent-Teacher interview. Please make sure your child comes to the conference! And please ensure that he/she is wearing school uniform. We look forward to seeing you there!
Swimming
This is our last week of swimming at Wharenui. Please ensure your child has their swimming gear at school every day this week. Many thanks to our parent helpers who have been assisting with this.
The school pool is now officially open. We won’t use it while we are still attending lessons at Wharenui, however we will begin using it (if the weather is good) from next week, onwards. Our swimming days will be Mon, Tues, Wed, and Thurs. Please send along swimming gear on these days and ensure that ALL school clothes (and undies!) are named. Many thanks
Week 7
Orchestra Demo Concert Friday 26 November - The school orchestra will demonstrate all the instruments that will be available to learn next year. Should you wish your child to learn an instrument, a form will go home following this concert for you to fill in for next year's tuition.
Week 8
Junior Athletics Day - Run, Jump Throw day, 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM, Thursday 2nd December. This is the Junior version of Athletics Day and the focus is on participation rather than competition. This is only for the Junior School and parents are welcome to come and watch and then share lunch with them afterwards. Sport uniforms to be worn on this day. (Postponement day is the 6th December)
Read, Feed, Speed Day – Friday 3rd December - This is a day for the Dads to come in and have some fun with their children. They will come to the classrooms and read with their children, then share in a sausage sizzle and then partake in some physical activity on the fields. It really is the most wonderful day and we encourage all fathers or other significant males to attend if possible.
National Standards Reports – National Standards Reports go home Friday 3 December.
Week 10
Cathedral Visit - Thursday 16th December 1:30 -2:30. Come and listen to the lovely singing voices of the Junior Team as they sing Christmas Carols at the Christchurch Cathedral.
Final School Assembly - Friday 17 December – Last day of school. This is a shortened school day and most parents attend the final assembly at 9:30, and then leave with their children after the assembly has finished 10:30 (approximately).
That’s all for now, but expect more things to follow as we continue with this busy term!
Kind regards
Kirsty and Paulette

Junior Dance
Last term, the Junior Team created a dance performance to share our learning about the seasons as our 'Make a Difference'. Unfortunately, the arrival of the earthquake prevented this performance from occurring.
In the last week of the term, the Junior Team had a 'sharing' afternoon where we all performed our dances for each other in the village. Here is a video to give you a taste of what the performance could have looked like...

PILOT TIME REFLECTION
Today as part of our independent learning (P.I.L.O.T Time), we tried having reading, writing and maths activities for us to choose from during the middle block (10.55am - 12.30pm). At the end of the middle block, we discussed how we found the different choices. Here are out thoughts...
Most of us liked being able to choose from different activities and thought the time was longer as we didn't need to stop what we were doing. We liked that we still had to do our 'Must Do's' and liked helping each other when working independently. Some of us found it hard to stay on task. Most liked the task board to see what to choose from.
Our new consideration is using the time carefully and making good choices so we are working on our 'hard spots'. Over the next couple of days, we are going to have a think about how we can make sure that we are working on our goals so we are using the time to learn 'new' things to become 'better than before'. You might like to talk about this at home.

100 Days at School Party
On Thursday 23 Spetember we celebrated our 100th day at school in Room 2. What a fun day we had! We started by sharing our bags of 100 items for News. We had a great selection of items which included 100 pieces of Lego, 100 spaghetti noodles, 100 stickers, 100 leaves... the list goes on!
We wrote in our '100 Days Book' for Writing. We had to write about the best thing we had done at school in the last 100 days, as well as what we could do now that we had been at school for 100 days. While we were writing, Louise came and took groups out to do some baking. They managed to make 100 chocolate chip biscuits! They were delicious! Thanks Louise.
For Reading we had to read 100 books - we did this as a class with each child having to read at least 5 books. Mrs Brownlie added to the total by reading books to the class.
For Maths we practiced counting to 100 in ones, tens and fives and then we did some Statistics work. We counted out 100 Smarties and made a tally chart of the different colours. Then we turned this into a picture graph. The children then got their own box of Smarties and made a tally chart and graph of their own Smarties.
Mrs N came in to join us for the party with Ben. She came with some bags of lollies! We had to count out 100 lollies which we then used in a lolly scramble. We made a bar graph of how many lollies each child collected from the lolly scramble. We also counted out 100 steps to see how far we could get. We used wool to measure the distance.
We then enjoyed an amazing lunch which included our 10o biscuits, fruit, sushi, sandwiches, cupcakes that were decorated with the number 100, mousetraps, quiche etc. We drank 100 mls of lemonade which the children helped to measure with Hayley's Mum, Mila. Thank you Mila. Thanks also to Zoey's mum Annette who helped to set up the food table and cleaned up after the children had finished. At the end of our shared lunch we put candles in the '100 shaped' lolly-cake cake that Georgiana had brought to school. We lit the candles and sang 'Happy 100 days to us!' All of the children then blew out the candles. We got to take this home at the end of the day, along with our lollies in our 100 day goodies bags!
Just before 3:00 PM, Mrs Davids brought the children over to Mrs Brownlie who was rehearsing with the Middle Choir. The Middle Choir surprised Team 2 by singing 'Happy 100 Days To You!' It was a lovely way to end a fantastic day! Thank you to all the children for being such great sports and to the parents who supported us by helping behind the scenes (counting out 100 items, providing food for the lunch etc). You are all amazing and you all deserve a great holiday! Mrs N and I look forward to seeing you all again next term.

Cricket Coaching
Today we had some coaching tips from Canterbury Cricket. They came out to teach us how to play cricket. We had to warm up our bodies first then we were shown how to catch and hit a ball. We enjoyed going out and learning some cricket skills.
We decided that we might get some of the cricket gear our from the Sport Shed and play games at lunch times.
Black Hat Thinking
It was hard to catch the ball when it went up high.
The bat was quite big to use.
It was hard to run fast with the bat.
White Hat Thinking
We went out on the field and did some running.
We had to throw the ball up in the air.
We had to hit the ball off the cones.
There were two coaches.
We had to warm up.
We had to get the balls and put them on the cones.
Have a look at us in action. There are some helpful tips on how to catch a ball and hit a ball with a cricket bat.

African Drumming
Today we had two African visitors from Team Beat come to play the drums for us. They were from Ghanya which is in west Africa. We found out that they play the drums to keep them fit, to send messages, to talk to each other and to entertain themselves.
We joined in and played the drums too. When we played the drums they were really loud and we had to hit the drums with our hands. We had to copy the people and do the same rhythm. We also had to do some African dancing too. To do African dancing, we had to shake our whole bodies from to side, we had to wobble and bend our knees and roll our hands underneath our legs.
When we get home we are going to show our families how to do African dancing too! Check out the video to see some of the action from today!

Earthquake
Hi everyone. Most of you have felt an earthquake for the first time now. It was a bit scary wasn't it? We have spoken to your parents on the phone and they have told us about how brave you have been since the earthquake last Saturday. Well done everyone. We thought it might be good for you to write down how you felt about the earthquake on the blog. This is what it was like for me...
I woke up and knew straight away that there was an earthquake, because I've felt one before. I leaped out of bed and told Mr Brownlie to get up too, but he was still half asleep and didn't believe that there was really an earthquake! After a couple of seconds, he realised I was right and he jumped out of bed to help with our children! Oscar and Elliot, my 2 big boys who sleep upstairs came down the stairs and met us in the hall. I had to wake up Michael, my 5 year old, because amazingly he was sleeping through the earthquake! My family then all gathered together in the dining room after the earthquake. We waited for a while under our dining table until we felt safe again. We talked about how important it was to 'drop, cover and hold' if we felt another shake.
We all slept together in the same room for a couple of nights after the earthquake but now my boys are happy to be back in their own rooms - and we are all getting a lot more sleep!!
I hope that you are all looking forward to going back to school tomorrow. We can't wait to see you all again.
Take care,

EARTHQUAKE
Wow! What an amazing few days!
I (Paulette) was very pleased to hear that everyone was safe and there wasn't much damage to your houses. Like you, we have been very shaken by the earthquake and the large aftershocks which Ben has nicely called 'The Wobbles'. Our house is all o.k just minor cracks but just across the road from us there are enormous cracks in the roads and our local bridge has been totally twisted around. As you are most likely aware that Avonside was quite badly hit. I am just pleased that the aftershocks have become much smaller!
I LOVE the poems and thoughts that Liam and Alex have posted. Kirsty and I would love to hear your stories or thoughts too. So feel free to blog any of your stories. This will be a nice ways to share the experience.
Keep an eye on the school website too as there are some really useful tips to help with any anxious children.
We (the staff) will be meeting tomorrow to discuss the transition back to school for the children and will ensure they feel as safe and as happy as possible. Please feel free to let Kirsty or I know if any of your children have been particularly 'shaken' by the past few days so we can cater to their needs at school.
Keep safe

BooK Week Reflections
We really liked the Pyjama Day because we got to come to school in our pyjamas and drink HOT CHOCOLATE! YUMMY!!
Some of the things we really enjoyed included.....
Going to the Book Fair in the library and looking at all the cool books we could buy.We thought it looked a bit like a shop.
The 'Dress Up' day was really cool because didn't need to come to school in our school uniforms. We really liked looking at all the different outfits during the parade. One bad thing about dressing up was that some of us found it uncomfortable to be in our costumes for the whole day and because it was raining, some of us couldn't go outside because of what we were wearing.
We loved the read around in the afternoons with different teachers coming to our class to read to us.
Georgiana like the book Down the back of the chair
Abby liked Koala Lou, we love you.
Eunseo's favourite was Kiss, Kiss Yuck, Yuck!
We wrote two books during Book Week. One was for our special visitors and grandparents on Grandparents Day and we also wrote and illustrated another one during the week.
We thought that Kyle Mewburn was really funny on Friday. We loved his book 'Old Huhu' and 'Kiss,Kiss, Yuck, Yuck!' He has written over 30 books!!
We can't wait for Book Week next year.
On Monday we will find out who won the Book Cover competition. Come into the class to see some of our entries. They are really cool!

The BIG BANG Concert
We went to the Big Bang Concert today. When we came back to school we used our thinking hats to reflect on the facts (White Hat), the good points (Yellow Hat) and things that could be improved (Green Hat).
Here are our some of our thoughts.....
WHITE HAT
There were people playing instruments.
We went on the bus to the Town Hall.
We saw violins, drums, cymbols, flutes and trumpets.
The wizard told us when to clap and when to stop.
The music was quite loud.
YELLOW HAT
I liked the music it made me want to dance.
I liked how the music was slow at times.
They all played nicely together.
They all watched the conductor Holly.
The magic spell was cool.
I liked being a conductor like Holly.
The streamers were cool at the end!. They looked like fireworks. They looked liked a rainbow rain!
GREEN HAT
There could have had songs that we could sing to.
They could have let us dance to the music.
They could have had coloured lights.
WE could have played instruments too.

Gymnastics Reflection
Over the past 2 weeks we have been going to the School of Gymnastics. The children participated in many challenging activities to develop their balance, co-ordination and flexibility. It was great to see them improve in each session. We talked about how we could use our school playground to build up our muscles especially when hanging! Since gymnastics has finished we have been practicing our heel toe balancing by walking along the lines on the courts. Some of us are still finding this a challenge!!
These are some of the things that we particularly enjoyed about gym.
"I loved going in the pit and I could do a safe landing." Georgiana
"Jumping in the pit was cool! I loved the feeling of the foam." Ruby
"I liked to help people if they were finding things hard to do." Eunseo
"I like to help people that makes me a great team player." Ben
"I found the hanging on the rings hard." Benjamin
"Jumping on the trampoline was my favourite." Milly, Reuben, Abby
"The beam was cool to walk down. I liked the high one the best" Maggie, Ruby, Harrison

Space Day Reflections
Today we became astronauts. In the first block we had to find out what is would be like to be an astronaut. Astronauts need to be fit and plan out their meals before they go into space. Did you know there is no sound in space?
It is really hard to do things with the astronaut clothes on because they are so big. It was really hard to pick up things with Miss Smith!
Astronauts have different jobs too. Some are scientists (people who discover new things), engineers( they fix and build things like the International Space Station) and there is always a doctor too in case someone gets sick!
After morning tea we BLASTED around the solar system to learn more about the planets.
We reflected on some of the facts we have learned using our White Thinking Hat.
Today I discovered that....
"You can only eat dried food in space," Eunseo.
"Bananas are not found out in space. They would get rotten!" Harrison.
"We discovered that you can't have fresh foods in space because they would get mouldy," Reilly. "You can't have bananas in space because they would get rotten," Zoey.
"Astronauts eat dried foods like died rice," Georgiana.
"I found out that you have to get a bag and put your drink in it and then drink it with a straw. Else, the drink would float about!" Ruby.
"Saturn has rings around it. They are made out of sand, dust and ice," Ben Bone.
"The sun is really, really hot. Mercury is the closest planet to the sun," Toby.
"Mercury is the smallest planet and it has craters," Benjamin.
"I found out that planet Saturn is dusty," Maggie.
"Astronauts have different jobs. They fix things and are called engineers," Milly.
"Space is really cold. Mercury is really cold when there is no sun on it," Bing Da.
"Venus goes around the sun faster than the Earth," Abby.
"Earth is the only place to have snow, grass and water," Hayley.
"Saturn has rings around it. Mercury is like the moon," Alex.
We had a very busy day! Talk to your child about other things they ahve found out and remember to use the links on our blog for cool websites.

Planet Discovery
Today we learned about the planets in our solar system. We found out that the word solar means sun. There are 8 different planets in our solar system. Jupiter, Uranus, Mars, Venus, Saturn, Earth, Mercury and Neptune.
Here are some interesting facts we disovered when we read some books about planets. We live on the planet called Earth and it is the only planet that has water. Saturn is the only planet that has rings. Jupiter is the BIGGEST planet in our solar system and it has 4 main moons. It only takes Mercury 88 days to orbit the sun. The sun is a star and it is VERY VERY hot! It might look small but it is very big. It is the closest sun to us. What do you know about planets? We would love to fins out some more facts!! Happy blogging!

Mission into Space
We found out that the moon is made out of dust and rocks. There is no grass on the moon or air to breathe. Astronauts have a special helmet and air tanks to help them breathe.
It would take us 18 sleeps to get to the moon in a jet plane. There is not much gravity on the moon so astronauts can take really big floaty steps.
The moon has craters which are like holes in the surface of the moon. We acted out what it would be like to be an astronaut on the moon. We thought it would be sooo cool!!

Our learning week 4
Hayley liked painting her rocket ship. "I liked learning about the letters everyday." Georgiana. "I liked going to the library and reading lots of books." Reilly. Zoe particularly enjoyed making the paper and doing our family trees.
Next week we can't wait to learn more letters, and to find out more about space especially about the world and the sun. We are going to watch how the sun changes or shadows during the day and do some wonderings about the sun and the stars. You might like to have a look at the night sky tonight! You could post some of your wondering on our blog. We would love to hear from you. Have a great weekend everyone!

WOW! What a great start to the term
We have been so busy over the past 4 weeks at school and it has been great to see the children settle into school with ease.
Last week we had our cultural Celebration which saw us flying our kites with our parents. We loved having you all along to share our learning with you. Our Cultural Cafe was a nice way for us to sit together and enjoy our shared lunch too.
Over the next few weeks we will continue to learn more about ourselves and how we can learn best at school. During our 'Discovery Time' in the afternoon we will also have the opportunity to start to learn about our Sun and stars. You might like to observe the night sky and talk with your child about what they can see.
