Newsletter Week 3
Wow, what a busy first couple of weeks back, with Fendalton Friends Commonwealth Games, a Junior Team trip to the Ngaio Marsh theatre, hosting the school assembly and lots of amazing learning in our classroom.
It was so nice to see many of you at our school assembly on Friday. We were both so proud of the children and their efforts in creating our assembly items. We are aware that some of you were unable to make the assembly due to work commitments. With this in mind, we recorded the STOMP item and this will be posted on the blog on Tuesday along with the silent movies we made to share the FOS fortnightly focus on being a Dream Maker.
Blog Pages
Our class blog page is a great way to keep you informed of the learning that is occurring in class along with any important notices. This coming term we are going to be posting the information you need about important events (school, team and class). We will let you know each time the blog is updated on the class noticeboard. The aim of this is to minimise our paper usage as well as giving you the opportunity to see our learning in progress.
So, check out our blog page for events that have happened, the children’s feedback, news and information and much much more. We would love for you to add comments about our work or use the learning links (Numeracy, Literacy and Inquiry) at home with your child. Our newsletters and information will be added here so please check it regularly.
The class address is www.fendalton.school.nz/2. If you would like to log in and make a comment click sign in and use the username room2@fendalton.school.nz, Password: fosroom2. Our newsletters will go online here, so keep checking for lots of exciting news.
Commonwealth Games
This was a great success. The children had smiles on their faces all day and had a fantastic time. They all got to try something new and everyone gave it all a go, which was great to see. Thankyou to all the parents who came along to support their child. Results, information and pictures can be found on the school website.
Swimming
This term we will be visiting Wharenui for our class swimming lessons. The children will be grouped according to ability and will be taught skills depending on this level. This is a great opportunity for all children, even if they do lessons outside school, the classes with help to develop their swimming at all levels. The classes will be run by qualified instructors and will have lots of support and encouragement. Transport of the children will be confirmed later so please continue to check the newsletters.
Your child will need to bring swimming togs, towel, goggles and hat if needed every swimming session and these will ALL need to be named.
If you did not receive the notice last week about our swimming times and request for parent help, please come in and see us.
Parent Help
We would love some assistance with our writing programme on Mondays and Tuesdays. If you are free from 9-9.45am come in and let us know.
EDIBLE GARDENS
We have a wonderful space at school for us to develop some edible gardens. If you know of any grandparents who are avid gardeners keen to inspire our younger generation, we would LOVE to hear form them!!
Inquiry learning
Over the next couple of weeks we will continue our FOUNDATION phase of our inquiry where we are learning about our body and how it works. So far we have explored our main body parts, where they are and their function. We have conducted investigations about our bones and why we have them. This coming week we will be learning more about our muscles, how they work and what we need to do to keep our body healthy.
Cathedral singing
This year we are lucky to be invited to sing in the Cathedral in the town centre. Children will travel with their classes to sing Christmas songs and donate a gift. Information about this, and asking for parent help on the busses with come home shortly. This is an amazing event, and a lovely way for the children to sing and celebrate the end of a year. If you are unable to help but would still like to come and hear the singing, you can go to the cathedral yourself.

Junior Dance
Last term, the Junior Team created a dance performance to share our learning about the seasons as our 'Make a Difference'. Unfortunately, the arrival of the earthquake prevented this performance from occurring.
In the last week of the term, the Junior Team had a 'sharing' afternoon where we all performed our dances for each other in the village. Here is a video to give you a taste of what the performance could have looked like...

PILOT TIME REFLECTION
Today as part of our independent learning (P.I.L.O.T Time), we tried having reading, writing and maths activities for us to choose from during the middle block (10.55am - 12.30pm). At the end of the middle block, we discussed how we found the different choices. Here are out thoughts...
Most of us liked being able to choose from different activities and thought the time was longer as we didn't need to stop what we were doing. We liked that we still had to do our 'Must Do's' and liked helping each other when working independently. Some of us found it hard to stay on task. Most liked the task board to see what to choose from.
Our new consideration is using the time carefully and making good choices so we are working on our 'hard spots'. Over the next couple of days, we are going to have a think about how we can make sure that we are working on our goals so we are using the time to learn 'new' things to become 'better than before'. You might like to talk about this at home.
